Jennifer Mattern | That’s exactly the problem. I think about hiring a VA a few times a year, but the time it would take me to train them to do everything I do would kill the potential benefits. And that’s not to mention that most VAs I’ve seen handling anything marketing-related (I’d want someone mostly for that grunt work while I dealt with planning, development, and writing) are blatant spammers. I have high ethical standards, especially when it comes to marketing and PR, and I would have a hard time finding someone I could trust completely to handle that for me. And since I have expertise in that area that a VA doesn’t, it just doesn’t make sense to pay for someone who’s less qualified than I am myself. And having to hire a marketing firm, PR firm, and still an assistant for the grunt-style work would just be too big a pain in the ass (and frankly the firms have a lot of the same ethical issues I’d be worried about with your average individual offering those services). Unfortunately leaving one day for that stuff also doesn’t work for me, because I already work a short work week. That would leave only three days where I’m available to clients, and I think that would be a bit unfair given how understanding they are about my existing scheduling decisions. Plus it just helps to spread things out a bit more (in my case at least). Usually it’s fine. I just have the occasional “blah” day where I’m like “somebody nudge me along!”
